IO – The International Office of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur (UPNVJT) successfully held its annual cultural immersion program, IO Explore, on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Early in the morning, international students departed from the Surabaya campus for an exciting journey to Malang. Designed as a routine program for freshmen, IO Explore aims to introduce global scholars to the rich local heritage of East Java. This year’s trip offered a perfect blend of ancient historical education and modern cultural exploration.
Upon arriving at Kampung Budaya Polowijen, the students were immediately greeted with a vibrant traditional welcoming ceremony. The local community performed the energetic Sabrang Dance to honor the arrival of the international guests. To refresh the participants after their trip, they were served classic traditional Javanese beverages, Es Degan (young coconut ice) and Es Dawet. This heartwarming reception instantly made the students feel connected to the authentic local Javanese hospitality.

The cultural immersion deepened as the group met Mbah Jo, a dedicated cultural caretaker of the village. He captivated the global scholars with legendary historical tales of Polowijen, focusing on the famous figures Ken Arok and Ken Dedes. Following the storytelling session, Mbah Jo guided the group to explore significant local historical sites, including the sacred Petilasan Ken Dedes and the ancient tombs. Walking through these historical grounds allowed the international students to witness Indonesia’s majestic past firsthand.
One of the most highly anticipated activities of the day was the interactive traditional dance trial. Everyone, regardless of their dancing background, joyfully participated in learning the basic moves of the local Javanese dance. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and excitement as the students tried to mimic the graceful gestures together. Fago, a student from Timor Leste, shared his excitement about the experience, “The traditional dance is so unique! I am very happy to learn about Indonesian culture. Even though the trip was tiring, I really enjoyed it and felt incredibly excited throughout the day!” He explained.

After a culturally enriching experience, the group headed to the popular Kayutangan Heritage for a more relaxed experience. The international students enjoyed strolling along the aesthetic vintage streets, taking pictures, and hunting for delicious local street food. This casual exploration perfectly wrapped up the trip, giving the participants a taste of Malang’s lively urban culture. Ultimately, IO Explore successfully created unforgettable memories and fostered a deeper appreciation for Indonesian heritage among the new global scholars.
