Monday, October 6, 2014, became a historic day for the UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur’s community. The date marked as a monumental moment when the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), signed an inscription commemorating the UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur confirmation as a State University.

The signing ceremony was carried out by SBY accompanied by the Minister of Education and Culture M. Nuh and the Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro at the Majapahit Lounge Mako Armatim Surabaya. There were also 11 others higher institutions that were made official to be state universities.

The Rector of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur, Prof. Dr. Ir Teguh Sudarto MP is elated with this endorsement. He emphasized that although UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur has become a State University, it will not loosen the quality of UPN.  Mr. Sudarto added that he would further improve the quality of education which had been running smoothly so far. “We will further improve the quality of education, starting from the quality of educators, curriculum, facilities, and accreditation,” he said.

In addition, the Rector of UPN also emphasized that he would continue to maintain the National Defense education, which is the hallmark of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur. He added that even though it has become a State University, UPN will not be separated from the Ministry of Defense, which has been accommodating UPN. “The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia will remain the inspiration for our curriculum. There will be a Director-General of State Defense who will guide it,” he explained.
