A Safe Space to Practice and Grow
The name “Broken English” may sound playful, but the concept is rooted in a powerful mission: normalizing mistakes, encouraging conversation, and supporting the university’s internationalization goals. “We understand how difficult it is to go global if the academic community isn’t comfortable speaking English,” say the program’s founders. “That’s why we created this space — not to correct, but to connect.”
What sets the program apart is its open, inclusive atmosphere. Participation is free and welcomes students, administrative staff, and faculty from all backgrounds and levels of English proficiency. The environment is deliberately kept non-judgmental, ensuring everyone feels safe expressing themselves. If anyone experiences inappropriate behavior, the organizers take it seriously and act swiftly to maintain a positive space.
Unlike traditional classroom settings or large group discussions — which often leave shy participants behind — Broken English sessions are structured as one-on-one conversations in breakout rooms. This format ensures that everyone has equal time to speak, listen, and learn.
Upon joining the Zoom session, participants are placed into breakout rooms with one or two others. They are encouraged to use the weekly conversation prompt — a set of 6–10 engaging questions — or choose a topic that interests them. Each conversation lasted 12 minutes before a quick break and reshuffling to meet a new partner. This dynamic flow keeps the experience both fun and effective.

Why Join the Broken English Speaking Chamber?
Over 200 people have joined the program, and each session attracts around 30 to 50 participants. The benefits of joining include:
- Exploring diverse and meaningful weekly topics
- Practicing English in a relaxed, judgment-free environment
- Sharing cultural insights with people from various backgrounds
- Building real friendships and expanding your global network
Sometimes, native English speakers are invited to join, allowing participants to experience authentic cross-cultural conversations.
Many participants report feeling more confident speaking English after just a few sessions. For some, Broken English has sparked the courage to pursue international opportunities, such as student exchange or global internships.
Ofel Abiwada, International Relations 2021, shared, “Broken English helped me stop worrying about grammar and start focusing on connection. Now I’m not afraid to speak up in international meetings.”

Whether you’re an English learner or someone looking to connect, Broken English Speaking Chamber offers a welcoming place to grow — one conversation at a time.
